Canterbury Front Row

Larsen took at least a half dozen photographs of this front row of the audience at Canterbury – full-length photographs that allow us to see the clothes these men wore, the plaid woolen jackets, the long woolen socks pulled up above the high-top work boots. Here is an example of several of those other shots. The additional photographs differ in one important respect from the one that was finally chosen. In the published photo the speaker is present and you see the Canterbury residents responding to his appeal, just as the townspeople in Rockwell’s image are reacting (albeit quite stoically) to what they are hearing.
